Everything Goat!
Bruce and I have been out on the West Coast for a week now--and we've had a blast doing a million goaty things--shooting some videos for chow.com, shooting episodes of Bruce Aidells' show, teaching at Draeger's in San Mateo, and cooking at the Third Annual Goat Festival at the Ferry Terminal Market in downtown San Francisco. Here's a photo of Yanne from Cypress Grove cheesemakers, getting ready to pass out her wares at the festival.
Have you had Humboldt Fog from Cypress Grove? And have you had it cedar-planked on the grill? It's a recipe in our goaty tome--and it's so darn fine. Wow. Put a tome of goat cheese on a cedar plank and let it go until smoky and melty. I ask you: is there anything better?
We cooked our goat cheese and spinach dumplings at the festival. Have you had those yet? So delicious. If you want to find out more about the recipe, check out Carolyn Jung's take on them on her blog foodgal--which you can find right here.
Look at the trays of stuff getting ready for tastes. All those little goaty dumplings, ready to be poached. And sample of Redwood Hills' kefir ready for the crowd. We missed you!
We also made it over to Omnivore Books in Noe Valley where Jennifer Bice of Redwood Hill set up a cheese tasting with her crottins and camembert-style Cameo from her certified-humane goat dairy up in Sebastapol, California. Everyone got to sample these fine cheeses--and even had the honor of Jennifer telling us about the processes that went into the art of these two special cheeses.
There's so much more beyond chevre. And I love chevre! But goat cheese is a world to explore in its own right. We've got dozens of suggestions for specific goat cheeses in our new book.
So that's what we've been up to. And soon we're off to Texas to spread the gospel of goat at Central Markets across the state.
Listen: if you're serious about being a locavore, you'll be serious about goat. Why? More soon.
