LOBSTERS SCREAM WHEN YOU BOIL THEM!
It's here. The official publication of our take-down of the top 101 food and cooking myths.
I've been like the cat who ate the canary with this one: grinning, waiting, not saying much. But it's arrived and you can find it wherever fine books are sold--or download a copy to your e-reader. Click on the picture of the book jacket to buy yours.
I hope you enjoy our fractured, crazy way of explaining the truth about these things. May I never again hear that you should fill unused indentations in a muffin tin with water before baking the muffins. Or that eating at night promotes weight gain. Or that medievals covered meat with honey to mask the rot.
I've had so many people already tell me they read the book in one sitting. One person even blamed me for not getting out of bed on a Saturday! Hey, I'll take that as a compliment--although I suspect it wouldn't take a lot to keep most of us in bed on a Saturday if we had a choice.
We shot several videos for the book. I thought I'd collect them here so you can see them. Cute stuff, really--although I don't know what happens to me on camera. Some weirdo takes over my body. I swear I'm the most graceful person I know--although I don't get out much.
First, the myth about baking and room temperature butter.
Second, the five second rule. Really? You eat off the floor?
Next, the question of negative-calorie foods. If it seems too good to be true. . . .
And finally, the things people do to keep from crying when they chop onions.
There's lots more in the book--including fuller explanations of each of these, a whole science fandango take-down of the top 101. I can't wait to hear what you think!

Love it! A little sad about the 5-second rule as I invoked it recently :) Can't wait to read the book and share your wit and wisdom. Thanks guys.
You two really are just too damn cute. :)
Scarlett O'Hara?
I guess that next you'll be telling us that Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy aren't real! Love the book.
Thanks, Celia.
And yes, Valerie, there is a Santa Claus.

love the videos! i can't wait to add this book to my collection. :-)
This book has all the wit and sparkle of Bruce and Mark in person. If you've ever seen one of their cooking sessions, you know what I mean. I couldln't put it down; I literally laughed my way through it. Lots of good information, too (the bonus). I feel sorry for people who do not have this book.
Wow. Thanks, Marion.

Hi there! OK, you guys are doing everyone a huge disservice by not having made an accompanying DVD for the book. Watching the videos you posted made me laugh so hard I woke my sleepinig son in my arms! You guys are really awesome as well as informative. You REALLY need to have your own TV show!! And I thought Alton Brown could be funny (-; ! Seriously, if you can't do a TV show then at least start creating DVDs. To be able to laugh while gleaning useful information is a powerful one-two punch in the arena of cooking (don't ask me where that metaphor came from - it just popped into my head. Oh, wait - I was watching "Rocky" yesterday (-: !).
I really enjoyed your videos, and I'm going out to get a copy of the book today! Thanks for making my day!
Coleen: We aim to please!
